Resources and technical articles

Practical guides on surveying, subsurface investigation, LiDAR and GIS.

Our technical team is preparing guides on survey methods, preparation and deliverables.

About these resources

This section will hold practical, plain-language guides written by the SGTS technical team: how survey methods work, how to prepare a site and a brief, what different deliverables contain, and how to read and use survey data. Articles are published only after technical review.

Until the first guides are published, the most detailed reference material is on the service pages. Each one explains the method, typical applications, methodology, preparation, limitations and frequently asked questions.

Service guides

  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Survey — Non-destructive subsurface investigation using electromagnetic pulses to identify reflections from buried features, interfaces and anomalies, interpreted from radargrams.
  • DGPS Survey — Satellite positioning with differential corrections to establish control points, transfer coordinates and position alignments, ground control and site features in a defined coordinate system.
  • Total Station Survey — Angle and distance measurement with an electronic total station for control networks, detail surveys, setting-out and level transfer on construction and infrastructure sites.
  • Topographical Survey — Measurement of ground levels, contours and natural and built features, tied to control and delivered as CAD drawings and terrain models for planning and design.
  • LiDAR Survey — Laser-based capture of dense three-dimensional point clouds for terrain models, surface models, contours and feature extraction across sites and corridors.
  • GIS Survey and Mapping — Collection, georeferencing, structuring and validation of spatial data so that assets, land and infrastructure can be mapped, queried and analysed in a GIS.
